11 – Objection to road into John Long Canyon (1992)

(This is a part of a series of gleanings from the history of CRC’s 30 years of work; additional posts available here.)

In March 1992, the Forest Service proposed building a road into John Long Canyon, on the west side of the Chiricahua Mountains between West Turkey Creek and the Rucker road, in a highly sensitive riparian area. We objected. That proposal subsided for a few years, then resurfaced.

Late in 1999, CRC learned of another initiative to bulldoze a new road into John Long Canyon. Public outcry grew, and once again the issue faded away.

This battle, stretching over decades, is especially relevant today because a very similar for John Long Canyon has again reared its ugly head.
